The future in glass? A burning question for many in Eastern Bavaria and in other glass regions in Europe. With the Glass Works project Bild-Werk Frauenau and its cooperation partners in Denmark, Austria and the Czech Republic are addressing this topic on various levels.
As a prelude to the project, Bild-Werk Frauenau and the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology of the University of Graz invite to an international conference in the traditional glassmaker's town Frauenau on May 31st and June 1st. Together with the speakers, with glass artists and designers, students, trainers and all those interested, the conference aims to investigate how successful and future-oriented concepts for European glass art and manufacture may look like.
In specialist lectures on the friday, representatives from regional politics, science, art and cultural work present current development concepts of European glass regions. The lectures give exciting insights into how traditional glass regions and producers redefine themselves thus successfully mastering the leap into globalized modernity.
On the saturday European glass artists will give insights into their distinct professional life styles with short impulse lectures. They introduce their individual and surprisingly diverse business models and report on the great importance of networks and collaborations. Finally, in joint workshops and discussions ideas and concepts are discussed in order to give impulses and inspirations for a successful future in and with the material glass.
The conference concludes in the evening with a get-together at Bild-Werk with an opportunity for exchange and networking across borders.
Lectures on May 31 in the Glasmuseum Frauenau with Prof. Dr. Katharina Eisch-Angus (University Graz, A), Anne Thomas ( Vice mayor of Bornholm, DK), Mette Bielefeldt Bruun (Museum Sydøstdanmark, DK), Maja Heuer (The Glass Factory, SE) and Prof. Dr. Sylva Petrová (Art historian, CZ)
Workshops with impulse lectures on June 1 in Bild-Werk Frauenau, Tom's Hall, with Nathalie Flückiger (Prague), Nadania Idriss (Berlin Glas e.V.), Jaroslav Šara (Kolektiv Ateliers, Nový Bor), Cornelius Réer (Nürnberger Glaswerkstätte) and Ronald Fischer (Atelier Männerhaut, Zwiesel) amongst others
